Sign of the Cross and a Sad Sign of the Times

I don't know what incenses me more - the events which spawned this article or the tone of the article itself. Some background here. Apparently a goalkeeper on a Scottish soccer team made the sign of the cross during a match. This prompted a police investigation and led authorities. What offense say you? Let the PC prosecutor tell you:

On this occasion, the actions included a combination of behaviour before a crowd
in the charged atmosphere of an Old Firm match which provoked alarm and crowd trouble and as such constituted a breach of the peace.

Ruth Kelly, a former Education Secretary questioned the prosecutor's handling of the case, and this piece of objective journalism:

Kelly risks raising tensions on bigotry in football

By Lucy Bannerman

RUTH KELLY risked inflaming a row over religious bigotry in Scottish football
yesterday when she questioned the decision to caution a Celtic goalkeeper who
blessed himself during an Old Firm match.

In an unusual move, the Communities and Local Government Secretary, a Roman Catholic, expressed an opinion on the case, which was handled by Scottish prosecutors, saying that she was “surprised” by the warning given to a Polish player, Artur Boruc, for a breach of the peace after he made the gesture on the pitch. An investigation by the Procurator Fiscal found that Boruc had made several gestures, including the sign of the cross, which provoked “alarm and crowd trouble” and which were directed towards the primarily Protestant home fans during the match at Glasgow Rangers’ Ibrox Stadium on February 12.

The fixture between Celtic and Rangers — each of which has strong religious associations — has long been a flashpoint for sectarian tensions, and Strathclyde Police and the Scottish Executive have taken a tough stance on bigotry within the game.

However, Ms Kelly, a member of the Opus Dei institution, yesterday questioned whether the police investigation of the complaints ran counter to values of religious tolerance.

Airing her views on the BBC News 24 Sunday Programme, she said: “I am surprised because this has traditionally been a country which has valued religious diversity — and cultural and racial diversity as well — and where there has been freedom of expression, both to express religious symbols but also other cultural symbols as well.”

Ms Kelly, the former Education Secretary, has repeatedly denied that her religious beliefs may influence decisions she makes as a minister.

Her membership of Opus Dei, the conservative religious organisation that regards practising homosexuals as sinners, came under particular scrutiny after her appointment as Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, a position that puts her in charge of the Government’s equality unit and anti-discrimination policy.

The Catholic Church in Scotland has already condemned the decision to caution Boruc, 26, after complaints were made about his behaviour.

However, in a statement last night the Crown Office said that it had been “in the public interest” to take action against Boruc. A more minor incident would have been dealt with informally by police, it added.

The prosecuting body said: “We have a well-established policy of looking carefully and sensitively at incidents involving participants at sporting events. The Procurator Fiscal concluded that the effect of the behaviour of the player on the crowd was such as to require the consideration of criminal proceedings.

“It concluded it was necessary to bring clearly to the player’s attention that conduct which involved gesticulating at and incensing the crowd at a football match amounted to the offence of breach of the peace and was unacceptable.”

Prosecutors had not seen Boruc’s gesture because it was not caught on camera, the statement added, but they relied on witness statements and footage of the crowd’s response.

The caution, which is effectively an alternative to prosecution, does not leave him with a criminal record, although information about the caution will be retained.

A new strategy tackling religious bigotry within football is expected to be published this year.

Witness statements? Investigation? Breach of the peace. The world must be coming to an end because I just don't understand it anymore.

A Pulitzer and a Howitzer

I surmise by now that most who tour the political blogosphere (at least the right minded end of it) have seen zombie's brilliant expose of the Red Cross ambulance incident in Lebanon. It is a sterling example of all that is right about blogging - a meticulous and thoroughly researched [-piece which blows the lid off the shoddy reporting of the fine folks at MSM. Why not a Pulitzer for zombie.

These are some of the the current Pulitzer Prize category definitions for the competition which might be applicable:

For a distinguished example of meritorious public service by a newspaper through the use of its journalistic resources which, as well as reporting, may include editorials, cartoons, photographs and online material.

For a distinguished example of investigative reporting by an individual or team, presented as a single article or series., in print or in print and online.

For a distinguished example of explanatory reporting that illuminates a significant and complex subject, demonstrating mastery of the subject, lucid writing and clear presentation, in print or in print and online.

For a distinguished example of reporting on international affairs, in print or in print and online.

For distinguished commentary, in print or in print and online.

For distinguished criticism, in print or in print and online.

For distinguished editorial writing, the test of excellence being clearness of style, moral purpose, sound reasoning, and power to influence public opinion in what the writer conceives to be the right direction, in print or in print and online.

Tony B.

I don't know how the words Tony Bennett were not immediately followed by the words 'has been' but apparently the feller has some juice. He uses it against America:

Legendary singer TONY BENNETT has slammed his home country of
America for not contributing anything other than jazz
music to world art and culture. The IF I RULED THE WORLD crooner feels that Europe and Asia offer far more culturally than America does. Bennett says, "I have travelled around the world to Asia and Europe. They show you what they have contributed to the world. The British show you theatre, the Italians show you music and art, the French show you cooking and painting, and the Germans show you science. "The only thing that the United States, which is still a young country, has contributed culturally to the world is jazz - elongated improvisation. It's tragic."

Message to Tony: You are a fucking CROONER, now shut your cheap lazy ballad singing ass. Your sun has set, your day is gone, be happy with the footnote you have become.

Queens' Finest Bust Dangerous Criminal

All NYers are safer now:

Mets fan, 18, charged with impersonating reporter

Ryan Leli loves the New York Mets.

The Suffolk County teenager loved the Mets so much that authorities say he posed as a reporter to get into Shea Stadium and talk with players.

Police arrested Leli, 18, on Friday night at Shea just before the start of the Mets' game against the Colorado Rockies game and charged him with impersonating a journalist, the Queens district attorney announced Saturday.

Prosecutors say Leli told Mets officials he worked for NBC Universal and showed a fake NBC employee identification card so he could get press credentials.

Leli first used the press pass to attend an Aug. 10 game between the Mets and the San Diego Padres. Authorities said Leli used the pass to approach and chat with players including Mike Piazza before and after that game.

Leli used the fake NBC identification again Friday to get another press pass for the Mets-Rockies game.

Mets management apparently became suspicious and contacted authorities.
Leli was also charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument, falsifying business records, larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, criminal impersonation and criminal trespass.

He was arraigned Saturday in Queens Criminal Court and released.

Leli was scheduled to return to court Sept. 27. He faces up to seven years in prison if he is convicted.

Leli's attorney John Rapaway did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Man Is Trapped in Chocolate for 2 Hours

A 21-year-old man was trapped in a tank of chocolate for about two hours early Friday, police said.
Capt. Randy Berner said the worker said he got into the tank at the Debelis Corp. to unplug it and became trapped waist deep in the chocolate.
"It was pretty thick. It was virtually like quicksand," Berner said, and co-workers, police and firefighters were not able to get him out until the chocolate could be thinned out.
"It's the first time I've ever heard of anything like this," the police captain said. The worker said his ankles were sore after the incident, and he was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, Berner said.

Another Fine Leap for Diversity

Andy Young, US ambassador to the United Nation, former Atlanta mayor and civil rights leader [chuckle - ed.] was hired to spruce up Wal-Mart's image in the minority community. I don't think he quite achieved his purpose. Here is the righteous Reverend explaining why Wal-Mart isnt the source of all evil in the world, it is the mom and pop shops:

``Well, I think they should; they ran the 'mom and pop' stores out of my neighborhood,'' the paper quoted Young as saying. ``But you see, those are the people who have been overcharging us, selling us stale bread and bad meat and wilted vegetables. And they sold out and moved to Florida. I think they've ripped off our communities enough. First it was Jews, then it was Koreans and now it's Arabs; very few black people own these stores.''

Joos, nips and camel jockeys. Thanks Rev for cultutral analysis. Dollars to doughnuts this racist will still be referrred to as the "distinguished civil rights leader". If a Repub in Congress coughed up bile like this he'd be belly up at a bar faster than Rev Jackson could shake down a multinational.

Kate Hudson and Chris Robinson Split

Who gives a shit? I just wanted an easy excuse to dig up an old quote which might serve to vindicate anyone indicted for telling a 'dumb blonde' joke. Here the daughter of Goldie snarks on America.
"Sometimes I'll be walking down the street and I'll hear some American and I'll just go, 'Of course they hate us, of course they can't stand us. We're the most annoying, boisterous creatures in the world. I mean we come in and we eat mounds of food, and we're like, 'Where's the kaachup [sic] for our French fries.' I'm like, 'Shut up!'"

May your divorce be a nasty, bitter one, skank.

Ed Koch Gets It Right

I lived in NYC during the entirety of NYC Mayor Ed Koch's term. I didn't always agree with him but I always appreciated his candor, his vigilance and his love of the city. He is and was a good man with important insight that should be listened to.

He speaks out about the present conflict.

His conclusion:

In my judgment, when history evaluates George W. Bush's position in the
pantheon of presidents, he will be compared with Harry S. Truman. Bush's
fortitude in recognizing the danger of Islamic fundamentalism to the U.S. and,
indeed, the Western world, and his awareness of the need to win this war of
civilizations is remarkable. He deserves the applause of all Americans and in
time he will receive it.

How I Know the Left is Fucking Stupid

....because I visited the Democratic Underground.

Moron number 1:

George Bush must thank poodle Tony Blair for his help intrying to distract
the American public from the victory of a real democrat yesterday. How dare the
voters speak. Its so damn hard to rig the lever machines to flip the voteenough
when voters turn out in mass.

Moron number 2:

Bushie boy and his band of Bozo's have brought out the Bogey man again, ooooooh! be afraid now, Why is it every time it gets close to an election, the pukes bring out these alleged plots? what a joke, I'm more afraid of Al- Busha and company than I am of Al-Quada. Nikita Crushev back in the sixties said don't worry about Russia, America will destroy itself from within. Georgie boy and his clowns seem to be doing a pretty good job of it!!!!!!!!! The bought and payed for corporate media is really playing this shit up , as usual!

Moron number 3:
So are they stupid or intelligent? WHY WOULD THEY TRY TO GET 20 BOMBS ON PLANES WHEN THEYKNOW THAT AIRPORTS WOULD BE HIGHLY CONTROLLED?It smells so bad, it stinks so lousy! This could be the beginning of the scamthat leads to the cancellation of the elections in November. And Blair has tostay longer and longer in office because these two bastards are the right MEN in the rightplace to save the "FREE WORLD" and prepare it for is going to come...Could plainly vomit.

Yes, I realize quoting Democratic Underground commenters is a cheap shit blog post but sometimes it just has to be done.

Because they CAIR

It didnt take long for the Council on American-Islamic Relations to chime in on the London airline terror plot, and as always they are right on target:

“The American Muslim community supports efforts to ensure the safety and
security of the traveling public,” said CAIR Executive Director Nihad
Awad.

But wait. Slow down. What do they really CAIR about?

“We once again urge law enforcement authorities and elected officials to caution
against stereotyping entire religious or ethnic groups based on the alleged
actions of individuals.”

But Michelle Malkin reminds us they were really just young, British-born men of Asian origin anyway.

Return of the Vikings
From our Faroese corespondent: We have just celebrated our national festival day'ólavsøka' in Tórshavn. Historically it's to celebrate King Olaf of Norway, who christened the faroes anddied in the year 1020 or something. I took a picture(DSC00423.JPG) of a 'viking' at the 'viking'exhibition in Tórshavn.
