Duke Lacrosse Team on the Verge of Vindication?

All who have followed the Duke Lacrosse Team rape allegations know that Durham County prosecutors have had a tough time linking the alleged players to the rape. Tom Bevan of Real Clear Politics notices this:

There's probably no better way to get a feel for what's been happening in the Duke University lacrosse team rape story than to read a series of revised news alerts on the case issued by the Durham Police's Crimestoppers unit.

An initial release sent out April 3 which offered cash rewards for tips about the case read: "The victim was sodomized, raped, assaulted and robbed. This horrific crime sent shock waves throughout our community."

Yesterday at 11:16am, according to the Raleigh News & Observer, Crimestoppers issued a revised version of the same news release which dropped the entire second sentence about a "horrific crime" and also added a qualifier to the first: "The victim alleges that she was sodomized, raped, assaulted and robbed." [emphasis added]

A mere eighteen minutes later a third revision was issued, changing the word "victim" to complainant."

Many on the Left are still lining up squarely behind the woman. See also here. It is pathetic to see a rush to judgment merely because the case vindicates one's perverse and racist world view. Can anyone say Tawana.

Talkleft, a criminal justice blog and staunch defender of defendant's rights, is much more cautious.

UPDATE: Officer: Alleged victim 'passed-out drunk' : This is not evidence which will go towards proving the guilt of the possible defendants, but it will cast doubts on the alleged victim's recollection of events.

DURHAM, N.C., April 12 — Defense lawyers for several players on Duke University's lacrosse team said Wednesday that they expected at least one player to be indicted, perhaps as early as Monday, in the investigation of a woman's charges that she was raped by three players at a party last month.

The young black women can almost finish each other's stories. They go to a party, a concert, a nightclub. Twenty-somethings of all colors are flirting and dancing. And then it happens.

Inevitably, a woman says, a white man asks her to dance erotically while he watches. Or he grabs her rear end. Or asks for sex, in graphic detail, without bothering to ask her name.

If a white woman wrote same about black men she wouldn't finish the day in her job.
